John Felix Arnold III @The Shooting Gallery
Monday, 19 May 2014 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

John Felix Arnold III’s Pilgrimmage has taken over the Shooting Gallery. Opening last Friday, this glimpse into his world of Unstoppable Tomorrow has finally allowed us here in San Francisco to see our future past. Moving on from his recent show The Scourge in NYC, Arnold has let us see the work of the survivors of the apocalypse, generating creation and growth from immense destruction and chaos. I got a chance to sit down with Arnold, gallery owner Justin Giarla and Paxton Gate buyer Michael Levy (who graciously donated materials) before the show was hung, and will be posting the in-depth interview to the site in as soon as possible. In the mean time, get over to the Shooting Gallery as soon as you can to see this show. The panels glow in a way that I couldn’t have guessed and they warm the space and your viewing experience. You’ve got to experience the warthog, moped, panels and sound installation in person. If you don’t survive the apocalypse, this might be your only chance.

Helen Bayly (SF) also brought a little feminine touch to the gallery with the opening of Give Me What I Can’t Have in the project space. Balancing the raw materials of Arnold’s work, she has created paintings of beautiful young people and flowers covered in gold-leafed text, complete with walls that seem to be dripping in the luxurious and decadent setting in which these works are situated. Complete with foul language, these works speak to a sense of debauchery that may lead to the apocalypse to which Arnold is warning us of.

Stay tuned for the making of The Pilgrimmage, an interview examining a very unique local collaboration between artist, gallerist and buyer of all things curious. It’s an illuminating window onto the process of creating a show like this – a process which should be continued with others in the future.

Peter Gronquist @The Shooting Gallery
Friday, 02 May 2014 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

If you like guns and boobs, head on over to the Shooting Gallery; just don't expect the work to be all cheap ploys and hot chicks. With Make Stuff by Peter Gronquist (Portland) in the main space and Morgan Slade's Snake in the Eagle's Shadow in the project space, there is plenty spectacle to be had, but if you look just beyond it, you might actually get something out of the shows (PHOTOS).

Gronquist's taxidermied and gilded sculptures, along with some really subtle paintings, filled the space in a uniquely balanced way. If I hadn't met the guy that night, I might not believe that one person made all of this work. I fought through my debilitating fear of butterflies to see that they were meticulously pinned to the sculptures in just the right way. It seems like if there was one more butterfly, it could throw the whole thing off - but it works. It's like a consumer frenzy, complete with luxurious materials, animals, and bugs and then a quiet meditation in Rothko-like stillness.

Slade's hand-altered photographs seem to also encapsulate this balance through more bikini-clad women also with subtle painting aspects. I want to hate these photos but I can't - the way they are painted and drawn on both removes the cheesy allure of the girls and highlights the quality of the photograph. And for goodness sake, it's Riff Raff! This is exactly how photographs of him should look, complete with logos because he "only fucks with hoes who rock Dolce & Gabbana." He's ridiculous and these photos emphasize that, highlighting him as the Neon Icon.

So yes, there are lots of guns and boobs to be had, but it's a lot more than that, go see for yourself.

Kerry Miller @The Shooting Gallery
Friday, 14 February 2014 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

SAN FRANCISCO --- Kerry Miller's (UK) deconstructed books are fascinating. In her new body of work, Re-Imagination of the Book now running at The Shooting Gallery through March 8th, she does just that - re-imagines old and discarded books into newly complex works of art.

The books seem simple enough, they are just cut pages layered on one another, but they are so intricate they can draw your attention for hours, much like the words in the books themselves. Most of the crowd was gathered in the front galleries, like moths to bright colors, but I have a feeling that those who made it to the back were glad they did. These books provide some contrast to the paintings and crochet installation in the front and really bring minute details into focus. Go check them out before the show closes on March 8th.

Ferris Plock @The Shooting Gallery
Monday, 06 January 2014 /// Written by Trippe

SAN FRANCISCO --- We're back after a little Holiday breather with some images from Ferris Plock's (PREVIEWED) show which just completed at The Shooting Gallery. Rachel Ralph documents:

Our friend Ferris Plock let us see his new body of work with the opening of Unrest at the Shooting Gallery. Most of the works were on larger canvases and it was really great to be able to see all of the detail not only because of the size, but also because of the muted color palette of gold, grey, white and pastels. Clearly this show deserves a visit, and Ferris deserves a major congratulations on a great show. (STUDIO VISIT)

Unrest

December 14, 2013 - January 04, 2014

Shooting Gallery is pleased to present Unrestby Ferris Plock. The SF-based artist's fourth solo show with the Shooting Gallery will draw inspiration from the changing face of San Francisco, focusing on Western Addition/NOPA. The opening reception will be Saturday, December 14, from 7-11pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through January 4, 2014.

Heavily influenced by Japanese woodblocks of the Edo period, Plock will show 20-25 new character portraits featuring imagery of knights with neighborhood-specific armor and flags, all painted with acrylic, house paint, gouache and gold leaf on panel.

Michael Page at The Shooting Gallery
Friday, 18 October 2013 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

SAN FRANCISCO --- I love the paintings in Michael Page's (SF) show The Places We'll Go currently at the Shooting Gallery. They're soaked. They drip with color and seem to be saturated in a varnish that covers the surface fluidly, but the listed materials of them don't seem to indicate this covering layer. Emphasizing the playfulness indicated by the title of the show, these paintings could literally occupy your vision for hours, with your eyes racing back and forth across them. The crowd at the opening seemed to agree as remarks of delight and smiles spread across the room. The photographs do not do this work justice, and if you are in the city, they are absolutely worth a trip to see in person; just go.

The project space gallery won't dissapoint either. Currently housing Oakland-based artist Lauren Napolitano's A Well-Marked Path, the space feels like a step back in time and in the direction of the southwest. Combining paintings on found objects with delicate drawings on photographs and other found materials, this work brings a sense of a personal intimate relation with these objects. The sense of wonder fostered by Page's show in the main gallery was continued in this space, which drew viewers into its small niches with small, beautiful, and nostalgic elements. Simply, these shows are not to be missed.

I LV @The Shooting Gallery
Thursday, 18 July 2013 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

A little bit gaudy, a little bit cheeky, and a whole lot of quality describes the work which can now be seen in the Shooting Gallery's newest show I <3 LV. The artists in the show responded to the luxury designs of Louis Vuitton with work that reads as both literal and loosely-based. (PHOTOS)

Bringing the work of Niels "Shoe" Muelman in through video and that video's object output tied the show together, and connected it with the other spaces in the show. Forgoing the traditional logo of the company, several artists, such as Casey Gray, Chad Hasegawa, and Ferris Plock focused on the checkerboard pattern the company frequently uses, and provided a break from the heavy presence of the icon. Even more solace was provided by Meryl Pataky's Cellar Door which can be seen in the project space. Combining foliage and neon lights, this show reads like the garden outside of a glamorous ball, perfect for the concept of the main gallery and its luxury goods. But no matter how lost you may get in the high-priced world of this show, remember, the Tenderloin is just outside the door.

Yumiko Kayukawa & Aaron Nagel @Shooting Gallery
Tuesday, 25 June 2013 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

SAN FRANCISCO --- The Shooting Gallery opened both Madness by Yumiko Kayukawa (Seattle) and Bastion by Aaron Nagel (Oakland) on June 8th with Kayukawa in the main gallery and Nagel in the project space.

Kayukawa's work is very interesting, combining a deliberate flatness with immense detail, all perfectly constructed on their canvas supports. She was also there during the opening, approaching visitors and initiating conversations with them, and was a very refreshing and inviting presence. However, I was more attracted to the paintings of Aaron Nagel. They are not only beautiful, realistic portraits but with the inclusion of several small blue dots, the compositions become more complicated and move from basic nudes to a more personal vision of both spirituality and sensuality. These are not the fashion models seen in the front of White Walls, these are real women, and their depiction is executed perfectly, and the blue dots add a distinctive touch.

Hard Time Mini Mall @The Shooting Gallery
Thursday, 25 April 2013 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

The Shooting Gallery handed over the reins to the Red Truck Gallery (a New Orleans based gallery) which curated their new show, Hard Time Mini Mall and opened the it on Saturday night. This is my favorite show (so far) in the Shooting Gallery's new space and was packed full of art, a mini bar, and cowhide rugs. The Red Truck Gallery chose works with clear craftsmanship and it was easy to see in Ian Berry's denim assemblages and Chris Roberts-Antieau's awesome quilts. The space was completely packed, making it hard to see each piece individually, but this show deserves a second trip anyway. I look forward to spending more time with the chandeliers, automatons, and paintings before the show comes down on May 4th.

10 Years of The Shooting Gallery
Wednesday, 20 March 2013 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

The Shooting Gallery celebrated their 10th anniversary with a group show packed with people and work last Saturday night. The work is a sampling of the artists who have been with the gallery over the last decade and includes favorites like Ferris Plock, APEX, Robert Williams and Augustine Kofie. The space was stuffed full and people responded by coming out in droves. It was very difficult to get into the back project rooms, but that seemed to be an indication of the success of the night; too many people isn’t exactly a huge problem. The gallery really took advantage of their new space filling every room with work, and if this is what the first ten years looked like, I can’t wait to see what the next ten brings.

Winter Group Show @The Shooting Gallery
Tuesday, 22 January 2013 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

Bryan Schnelle,
Prepare to Die, Paper collage and enamel on canvas, 72"x72"
A week ago Saturday brought the opening of the Winter Group Show at Shooting Gallery. I got there very early, so a crowd was yet to form, but I hope some visitors braved the cold after a few drinks later in the evening. The artists showing are those that have helped with the continued development of the Shooting Gallery, including John Felix Arnold III, Ferris Plock, and APEX, all of whom have shown work recently in the Tenderloin. The intermingling of two-dimensional and sculptural works emphasized the variety of artists who show at the Shooting Gallery, which is a great way to finish their last show in this space. I can’t wait to see what they do with the larger space they are moving into very soon, continuing to foster creativity, but hopefully with much more room to do so.

The Fragile Art of Existence
Art by Skinner
@The Shooting Gallery
August 6 - August 27, 2011
Photos: Mildred

For the work featured in The Fragile Art of Existence, Skinner steps back a bit from his investigations of fear and destruction – in order to begin expanding his personal vision and scope of understanding. By taking risks, and making work outside of his comfort zone, Skinner hopes to free himself from any internal or external pressures that may pry him away from being present and “in the moment” with these new paintings. He has worked to eliminate any rushing, pressure, or stress that may prohibit him from making fluid, carefully balanced pieces that reflect this mentality, and provide a space for artistic experimentation and growth.

Anthony Michael Sneed Interview
Friday, 08 July 2011 /// Written by Daniel Rolnik

The Shooting Gallery here in San Francisco opens Grand Illusion, work by Anthony Michael Sneed Saturday, July 9th 7-11pm and runs through July 30th. In addition to paintings and handmade wooden object installations, Sneed will be releasing a print with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the San Francisco LGBT Community Center. Daniel Rolnik interviews Sneed covering his process, his musical past and how he was once part of a Christian cult. Featured here in this interview is some recent work and previous works.

Do you sketch everything out before you paint it?

I do it all in the computer.

The print with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the San Francisco LGBT Community Center

What program do you use?

Photoshop. I could probably do it in illustrator way better, but illustrator and I don’t get along.

How do you transfer the sketches from the computer onto canvass?

I don’t mean to sound like a geek, but it involves a series of math that I have to do. There’s a tool in Photoshop under the analysis menu called record measurements, where you can record each pixel. I lasso one row of pixels and it tells me how many pixels it is. Let’s say it measures 256px across in Photoshop and my actual canvass is 55.5 inches wide. I’d divide the two numbers; find out how big each pixel is, and then make custom rulers out of tape that equal those measurements. I make an x/y axis and cover the piece in tape - I don’t grid it out in pencil. I use an x-acto to cut the lines out on the x/y axis, pull it out, and paint it in. Eventually, I got to the point where I was making them like a manual screen-print, I would see where the color would be and paint huge blotches to save me a lot of time. It’s all math.

Wouldn’t it be easier to use a projector?

The lines wouldn’t be perfect because all types of weird shit can happen to lenses since they can get bumped or curved.

Is it true that you found out about the horror film you were in, Bad Biology, from craigslist?

That’s a lie. This girl I was hooking up with at the time had this TV show on the style network and was friends with the rapper R.A. Thornurn who was the produer and co-writer of Bad Biology and I knew of him since I was doing hip-hop music at the time, believe it or not. Anyways she asked me if I wanted to audition and I thought I’d give it a try even though I didn’t really think I’d get it, but I ended up getting the role which was cool.

What was your rapper name?

Chief Sneed. I’ve had like 7 different names and they’re all bad.

Did you take all of your rap offline?

Hell yeah. You can actually find some beats I produced for a record that we put Jay Z vocals over - which everyone and their mother has already done. Rob Swift from the X-ecutioners did all the cuts on it, which is cool. It’s called Native American Gangster because the vocals were taken from the American Gangster record that Jay Z did and the fact that I’m a quarter Cherokee Indian. My family lives on a reservation in North Carolina.

The Death of the Artist—and the Birth of the Creative Entrepreneur
Wednesday, 21 January 2015 10:34

When works of art become commodities and nothing else, when every endeavor becomes “creative” and everybody “a creative,” then art sinks back to craft and artists back to artisans—a word that, in its adjectival form, at least, is newly popular again. Artisanal pickles, artisanal poems: what’s the difference, after all? So “art” itself may disappear: art as Art, that old high thing. Which—unless, like me, you think we need a vessel for our inner life—is nothing much to mourn.

NYPD told to carry spray paint to cover graffiti

John Felix Arnold III on the Road to NYC

Well, John Felix Arnold III is at it again. This time, he and Carolyn LeBourgios packed an entire show into the back of a Prius and drove across the country to install it at Superchief Gallery in NYC. I met with him last week as he told me about the trip over delicious burritos at Taqueria Cancun (which is right across the street from FFDG and serves what I think is the best burrito in the city) as the self proclaimed "Only overweight artist in the game" spilled all the details.

FRENCH in Melbourne

London based illustrator FRENCH recently held a show of new works at the Melbourne based Mild Manners

Henry Gunderson at Ever Gold, SF

Ever Gold opened a new solo show by NYC based Henry Gunderson a couple Saturday nights ago and it was literally packed. So packed I couldn't actually see most of the art - but a big crowd doesn't seem like a problem. I got a good laugh at what I would call the 'cock climbing wall' as it was one of the few pieces I could see over the crowd. I haven't gotten a chance to go back and check it all out again, but I'm definitely going to as the paintings that I could get a peek at were really high quality and intruiguing. You should do the same.

Mario Wagner @Hashimoto

Mario Wagner (Berkeley) opened his new solo show A Glow that Transfers Creativity last Saturday night at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco.

Serge Gay Jr. @Spoke Art

The paintings in the show are each influenced by a musician, ranging from Freddy Mercury, to Madonna, to A Tribe Called Quest and they are so stylistically consistent with each musician's persona that they read as a cohesive body of work with incredible variation. If you told me they were each painted by a different person, I would not hesitate to believe you and it's really great to see a solo show with so much variety. The show is fun, poppy, very well done, and absolutely worth a look and maybe even a listen.

NYCHOS Mural on Ashbury and Haight

NYCHOS completed this great new mural on the corner of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco on Tuesday. Looks Amazing.

Sun Milk in Vienna

With rising rent in SF and knowing mostly other young artists without capitol, I desired a way to live rent free, have a space to do my craft, and get to see more of the world. Inspired by the many historical artists who have longed similar longings I discovered the beauty of artist residencies. Lilo runs Adhoc Collective in Vienna which not only has a fully equipped artists creative studio, but an indoor halfpipe, and private artist quarters. It was like a modern day castle or skate cathedral. It exists in almost a utopic state, totally free to those that apply and come with a real passion for both art and skateboarding

"How To Lose Yourself Completely" by Bryan Schnelle

I just wanted to share with you a piece I recently finished which took me 4 years to complete. Titled "How To Lose Yourself Completely (The September Issue)", it consists of a copy of the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine (the issue they made the documentary about) with all faces masked with a sharpie, and everything else entirely whited out. 840 pages of fun. -Bryan Schnelle

The Marsh Barge - Traveling the Mississippi River from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to quit my job, move out of my house, leave everything and travel again. So on August 21, 2013 I pushed a canoe packed full of gear into the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Lake Itasca, Minnesota, along with four of my best friends. Exactly 100 days later, I arrived at a marina near the Gulf of Mexico in a sailboat.
